Mathematics is everywhere, and knowing this I was too curious to know that, how math is also related in other aspects. In this article, I'm going to discuss some interesting and useful facts that are related to the math, and the relationship between math and various other aspects. And most interestingly, how solving math can bring positive impact on the human mind and cognitive abilities.
If you are from STEM background, then this article can be interesting and helpful for you.
Math Vs Truth
Certainly math reveals truth, but math itself is not the truth. A truth can be in any form, however, it is a tool discovered by the humans with system of rules to quantify various aspects in our life and nature for predicting and expressing accurate results. It is only because of our limited perception, we use the tool so called mathematics, to visualize practical results and outcomes.
Math In Our Daily Life
Math isn't only related to the science, it also applies in our daily life activities such as, business, finance, ratios, designing, conversion, production and manufacturing etc. So, that's why it's called as a universal language and also a tool.
It is called tool because, it helps in solving real world problems by means of calculations, conversion, approximations and visualizing results for various expected outcomes.
It is called language because, it helps us to understand and verify outcomes of various experiments and theories in mathematical form. For ex. Maxwell equations, which are exactly not the math, but it is merely a physical reactions represented in a mathematical form. Mathematics also relates to the practical language and logical language.
Life is also like a math, if u want something then you must give away something, because all the aspect in our life is based on quantities and approximation.
Does Universe Work According To The Math?
I was too curious about this question from long back. So, after doing some research, I got some practical answer to this question.
So, the universe actually does not work according to the math! because, universe is a physical entity, not a mathematical. That means, everything in universe is a matter & it happens just the way it wants, and not according to the mathematics. It is we the humans, mathematicalized for all these phenomenon. But the beauty of math is, it holds good in everything for expressing accurate results, hence the name universal language.
I would also give some illustration to be more clear..,
1. We all use GPS navigations for finding directions & places. Does that mean all the places and directions are created with the help of GPS? No!
2. We all play sports and indulge in various activities in our life, which are nothing but the physics. So, do we use any mathematics in our actions and movements? Again, No.
3. We all use calendar so does it mean our solar system is designed according to the calendar? Def. No! It's we humans designed the calendar based on the solar cycles and constellations.
Universe don't need mathematics to work, it knows what to do and how to work on it's own. - Jon Prabhu.
Relationship Between Physics and Math
Most people argue that physics cannot exist without a math, however which is not all true. Physics can exist without a math and math can exist without physics! Also physics without math remains as physics itself and it can work independent of math. It's we humans described the mathematical format for all the physical aspects for visualizing the outcome and results.
Nobody has invented any laws of physics, it's only the matter of observation, visualization and discovery that are already happening in our nature & universe.
Impact Of Solving Math On Human Mind
"Whatever you do, certainly it has an impact on you." - Jon Prabhu
Whether you read books, solve math, play sports, watch movies or any other activities, it has certain impact on you which are barely noticeable, and sometimes it can be quite tricky to observe these effects.
For example, let's say you lift weights, then your muscles builds overtime, if you solve puzzles, your cognitive ability improves overtime, if you read books, your knowledge increases overtime. In the same way, solving math also has certain effects on our mind, which requires deep level of observation to notice all these effects, which is what I'm going to discuss below.
- Mathing actually improves our ability to think, problem solving, analytical reasoning, practical and logical thinking, understanding and decision making ability, which generally constitutes intelligence. It is also the very basic way to enhance our cognitive skills.
- Math is like a lube for our brain. Without lube, machines don't work smoothly. So, math also does the same for human mind, which can increase our mental activity and productivity.
- Mathing also improves mental clarity and ability to think clearly. Thinking clearly is one of the most important skill required in our daily life, which helps in overcoming confusion and brings clarity in thinking, planning, reasoning and decision making.
Intelligence is associated with clarity or learning clearly than learning or knowing too many things, says Jon Prabhu.
- Engaging in mathematical activities can also enhance some of the personality traits like mental maturity, mental stability, positive thinking, boldness and also makes you more naturalist, practical thinker and a self reliant, which can be helpful in one's personal growth.
- Mathing can refresh our mind and makes our mindset well organized and structured.
- Mathing is not just about counting, calculating, solving math problems, finding the results and outcomes. But, it also trains our mind to think, analyze, ability to understand, problem solving, reasoning and reapplying the knowledge which are nothing but the intelligence.
- Math is like a drugs, at the beginning solving math can be hard, but later it gets highly addictive if engaged constantly in mathematical activities. So, math can be highly addictive as compared to reading.
- People who solve more math, tend to develop strong logical thinking and understanding skills as compared to people with other discipline.
However, solving engineering problems can be effective in order to experience these effects.
Reading Books Gives Knowledge, While Mathing Enhance Your Intelligence
Mathing can be 3 times more powerful to the mind as compared to reading books. Because mathing requires more mental activities (Intelligence) than reading. Here intelligence refers to a cognitive skills. But that intelligence between you and others is secondary, but primarily it is for yourself from the past to present.
Practically, anyone can be good at math if they practice more.
And learning math is like learning a language. The only difference is, languages are learned by listening and speaking but the math is learned by understanding and solving. The more you solve, the more you learn.
The only way to be good at math is to keep solving the math, - Jon Prabhu
If yoga is for body, then mathematics is for the mind!
Yoga has numerous physical health benefits, which is a stretching exercise and keeps our physical body fit and healthy. The same way, math also applies to our human mind, which involves enormous thinking, analyzing, understanding and problem solving activities.
So here, mind is like a muscle and mathing is like yoga.
The Mathematicians
Mathematicians are passionate explorers of the abstract realm, unlocking mysteries of numbers, shapes, and patterns. They possess a unique curiosity, creativity, and analytical thinking in order to solve complex practical problems, and push the boundaries of knowledge. Their contributions have transformed various fields, from science, technology, business, statistics and manufacturing.
Mathematicians are the architects of logic and the builders of intellectual progress, and they explore or seek truth beyond the perception that which normal person cannot visualize or predict things in the real world.
The difference between physicists, philosopher and a mathematicians is that, they all possess similar traits but, the mathematician are more deep thinker, detail oriented and accurate than any other ones. But mathematician can possess a traits of physicist, philosopher, astronomer, researcher and also an engineer than what physicist and philosopher possess the traits of mathematician.
Any physicist and philosopher can also become a mathematician depending on their interest.
Some of the skills that mathematicians mainly possess or the skills required for the person to become a mathematician are,
- Analytical Thinking
- Problem Solving
- Logical Reasoning
- Observation
- Computations
- Critical Thinking
- Abstract Thinking
- Mathematical Modeling
Like how music is an art for musicians, in the same way math is generally an art for mathematicians. So becoming a mathematician is somewhat like becoming a musician where you create your own music. By listening to music you don't become a musician, but by producing it. In the same way, the true sign of mathematician is not just about doing or solving math! but discovering a new mathematical concept or expressing anything in mathematical form.
Conclusion
I hope this article provided you some useful knowledge about math and it's relationship with various other aspects and also application of math in our daily life. And we also discussed the impact of solving math on our human mind. If you like this article, then share it with your friends. And write your opinion in the comment section below.
